This is a semi-random list of Things you can find in The Colour of Magic. There are more Things – nouns that aren’t persons, places, or ideas – in the book than are listed below. These are simply the ones I chose to include for one reason or another.
See the same Things in alphabetical order here.
Things in The Colour of Magic, the Chapter
Rhinu – Gold coin currency of the Agatean Empire.
Iconograph – Twoflower the Tourists is the first one known to bring one to Ankh-Morpork. You’d call it a camera, but I bet your camera doesn’t have an artistic imp inside. At least, I’m pretty sure it doesn’t.
Spell, The – It came from The Octavo, housed in the library at Unseen University (UU), and now resides in Rincewind the Wizard’s brain. Seven of The Spell’s eight words have been spoken to date.
Octavo, The – The most magical of all books, located in the library of UU. It is “the last remaining copy of the Creator’s own grimoire.”
Travellers’ Digestives, Captain Eightpanther’s – Food found in The Luggage. These biscuits have “saved many a life at sea, they have.”
Things in The Lure of the Wyrmberg
Octarine Fairy Book, The – Tome owned by Twoflower as a youngster. There be dragons in it.
Things in The Sending of Eight
Kring – Stolen by Hrun the Barbarian, it “was forged from a thunderbolt and has a soul but suffers no scabbard.” It can also talk.
Things in Close to the Edge
Metal Warriors – Made by Dactylos, they guard the Tomb of Pitchiu.
Light Dams – (Capacity 50,000 daylight hours) Found in the Great Nef desert, they were designed by Dactylos. Collected light was used as currency. Ahem.
Palace of the Seven Deserts – Built by Dactylos, a very busy man until he was terminated by the Arch-Astronomer of Krull.
Circumfence – A complicated arrangement of ropes, pulleys, wheels, and posts that runs around the Rim of the Disc. It catches larger objects, preventing them from going over the Rimfall.
Ghlen Livid – According to Twoflower: “The fermented vul nut drink they freeze-distil in my home country…Next year’s harvest, I fancy, from the colour.”
Re-annuals – Plants which, “because of an unusual four-dimensional twist in their genes, could be planted this year and come up last year.” The vul nut is one such plant.
Vul Nut Vine – A re-annual used in making vul nut wine. Obviously.
Vul Nut Wine – Could give drinkers insight into the future, which, from the nut’s point of view, was the past.
Fresnel’s Wonderful Concentrator – A spell wizards use to create the discs that are used like hovercraft over the water. In our world, a Fresnel lens is used in lighthouses. Now you get the picture, right?
Ajandurah’s Wand of Utter Negativity – Wielded by Marchesa in the face of Rincewind.
Atavarr’s Personal Gravitational Upset – Garghartra’s spell that left Rincewind stand on a wall. Clever name, no?
Potent Voyager, The – The spaceship designed in Krull by which its occupants were to discover the gender of A’Tuin.
Vestcake’s Floating Curse – A dreaded spell that the Arch-Astronomer never got to finish speaking.
Infernal Combustion Enigma – One of the most powerful spell known to the Arch-Astronomer. It had no effect on The Luggage at which is was directly directed.
Rimfishers – Birds who evolved a lifestyle of eating whatever comes to them over the Rimfall. Rincewind was the first to see them. Think about it.
