Soul Music Persons – Chronologic

Here are the souls you’ll find in Soul Music presented in chronological order – as they take the stage, as it were. To see them in alphabetical (a less interesting, though possibly more useful) order, click here.

Death – An anthrpomorphic personification comprised of a skeleton, covered in a black robe, and holding a scythe (or a sword, for kings). He communicates in CAPTIAL LETTERS without the quotation marks.

Mort (Mortimer) – A main character of the book of the same name – Mort, not Boy.

Ysabell – Adopted daughter of Death. It’s complicated. Eventually marries Mort. (If you don’t like spoilers, skip the previous sentence.)

Miss Eulalie Butts – Headmistress at the Quirm College for Young Ladies.

Susan Sto Helit – Daughter of Mort and Ysabell. Thus, Death’s granddaughter (adopted, so to speak).

Miss Cumber – Language teacher at the Quirm College for Young Ladies.

Miss Greggs – A history teacher at the Quirm College for Young Ladies.

Miss Traitor – Logic teacher at the Quirm College for Young Ladies.

Miss Stamp – A history teacher at the Quirm College for Young Ladies.

Imp y Celyn – Translated: Bud of the Holly. Lead singer and guitarist of The Band with Rocks In.

Alberto Malich the Wise (Albert) – Founder of Unseen University. “Wise” may just be an honorarium. Death’s housekeeper.

Rebecca Snell – Put a tooth under her pillow while living in the Quirm College dormitory.

Tooth Fairy – According to Granny, a “very hard-working woman.” Actually, one of several with the same job.

Miss Delcross – Co-founder of the Quirm College. Teaches Biology and Hygiene – not necessary correctly.

Medusa – Of Roundworld mythology. The one with the snaky hair.

Wold – Wrote Logic and Paradox.

Death of Rats – Once part of Death, he retained his own identity even after Bill Door ceased to be.

Klatchian Foreign Legion – This is where you go to… (Forget, sir.)

Corporal Cecil Wormsborough St. John “Nobby” Nobbs – Member of the Night Watch. Species: human. Probably.

Sergeant Frederick (Fred) Colon – Mainly of the Night Watch. Likes to stay out of trouble – especially other peoples’.

Lias Bluestone – Aka Cliff. Troll drummer in The Band with Rocks In.

Glod Glodsson – Aka Glod. Dwarf horn player in The Band with Rocks In.

Mr Clete – Secretary of the Musicians’ Guild. Met his end at the hand of the Death of Rats. Hat. Hat. Hat. (SNH. SNH. SNH.)

Patrician of Ankh – The leader of the city of Ankh-Morpork. You know him cordially as Havelock Vetinari.

Chrysoprase (aka Krysoprase and Chrystophrase) – Son of Kwartz? Head Troll.

Gimlet Gimlet – Owns the Hole Food Delicatessen.

Noxeuse – Conceived the Divisibility Paradox.

Lezek – Father of Mort. Mostly responsible for apprenticing his son to Death.

Quoth – Name used to refer to a raven only by the wizard Cheesewaller who thought he owned him. Mount of the Death of Rats. Will not use the N-word.

Iron Lily (UK) / Ronnie (US) – PE teacher at the Quirm College for Young Ladies.

Princess Jade – Troll college classmate of Susan.

Gloria Thogsdaughter – Dwarf college classmate of Susan.

Cassandra Fox – Gloria Thogsdaughter was looking at her pony! As if!

Lady Sarah Grateful – Noticed that Binky was in the loose box next to Browny. Oeuwa.

Binky – Death’s white (pale) horse, revealing the serendipitous side of Death.

Browny – Horse possibly owned by Lady Sarah Grateful.

C V Cheesewaller – Wizard who lived in Three Roses Alley, Quirm.

Sandman – Uses his bag of sand (without opening it) to help (young) people sleep.

Hogfather – Does his gifting thing at Hogswatch time.

Soul Cake Tuesday Duck – Anthropomorphic personification of Soul Cake Tuesday – for what it’s worth.

Old Man Trouble – Anthropomorphic personification of Murphy’s Law.

Lady Odile Flume – College classmate of Susan. A demi-hemi-semi-goddess due to her great-great-grandmother’s seduction by Blind Io.

Blind Io – Chief of the gods who live at Dunmanifestin. He appears to be blind but has many eyes outside his body.

Leonard of Quirm – Painter, inventor. (Think, da Vinci.)

Captain / Corporal Carrot Ironfoundersson – Member of the Night Watch. Adopted dwarf. Possibly king of Ankh-Morpork. Later promoted to Captain.

Vortin – Owns a diamond warehouse. (Spelled warehourse, in Soul Music.)

Jimkin Bearhugger – Owns a whiskey distillery (one or more) in Ankh.

(Head) Librarian – Formerly human, now simian. Favorite (and nearly only) word: Oook.

Hibiscus Dunelm – Latest owner of the Mended Drum.

Reg – God of club musicians.

Volf Volfssonssonssonsson – Vasung warrior handled by Susan in her role as Death.

Valkyries – Maidens who take slain warriors to the Halls of the Slain. I mean, where else?

Vasung – Tribe that fought the Bergunds.

Bergunds – Tribe that fought the Vasung.

D’regs – Klatchian and Hershebian. Cheerfully warlike nomadic tribe of the desert.

Archchancellor Mustrum Ridcully the Brown – Prominent leader of Unseen University. Sorta good at what he does – whatever that is.

Owen Mwnyy – Had a legendary harp that sang when danger threatened.

Lecturer in Recent Runes – Wizard at UU. Contrived wearing false beards over their beards as a disguise.

Senior Wrangler – Wizard at UU. This is an actual position in the Roundworld as well.

Chair of Indefinite Studies – Overweight wizard of UU. In on the discussion of the moving picture Blown Away.

Detritus – A troll who eventually becomes a leading member of the Watch.

Reader in Esoteric Studies – A wizard. Aka the Reader in The Lavatory.

Blert Wheedown – Known as a luthier and for his Guitar Primer.

Modo – UU’s dwarf gardener. Say “Hallo” when you see him.

Mr Hong – Owner of the briefly existing Three Jolly Luck Take-Away Fish Bar.

Iodine – Student that Susan knew in the fourth form.

Nigella – Student with Susan. Susan interpreted the name as “oops, we wanted a boy.”

Listening Monks – Led by Abbot Lobsang, they are trying to hear what the Creator said at Creation.

Cut-me-own-throat (C.M.O.T) Dibbler – Originally known as Claude Maximillian Overton Transpire Dibbler. Entrepreneur (unsuccessful). Will sell you a “pig” sausage innabun. Don’t ask questions.

Satchelmouth Lemon – Musicians’ Guild recruiting officer.

Mrs Palm – A lady among ladies (of the night). President of the Seamstresses’ Guild. Befriends (not in that way) Corporal Carrot when he first arrives in Ankh-Morpork. Runs the House of Negotiable Affection.

Count Casanunda (Casanunder) – Dwarf known as the Disc’s greatest lover.

Cumbling Michael – Beggar who (unnecessarily) admits the death of Lettice Knibbs.

Foul Ole Ron – Beggar who saw Angua in the nudd. “Millennium hand and shrimp!”

Fondel – Composed the “Wedding March” which the Librarian could play on Bloody Stupid Johnson’s pipe organ at UU.

Herbert “Mr Harpsichord” Shuffle – Musicians’ Guild librarian.

Ponder Stibbons – A student wizard. Reader in Invisible Writings. Often the brains of UU.

Tez the Terrible – Student at UU.

Skazz – Student at UU.

Big Mad Drongo – Student at UU. Aka Adrian Turnipseed, now a professor at Brazeneck.

Princess Keli (Queen Kelirehenna I) – Thanks to Mort, she didn’t die when she was supposed to. The cause of several existential problems in Mort.

Gibbsson – Blert Wheedown’s apprentice at the guitar shop.

Mrs Marietta Cosmopolite – Of 3 Quirm Street, Ankh-Morpork. Dress-maker (seamstress) in charge of costumes in Holy Wood.

Riktor the Tinkerer / Counter – Inventor of the resograph.

Crash – Lead singer in the band with various names.

Jimbo – Lead guitarist in the band with various names.

Noddy – Bass player in the band with various names.

Scum – Drummer in the band with various names.

Gortlick – A songwriter with Hammerjug.

Hammerjug – A songwriter with Gortlick.

De Bris gang – A troll criminal organization.

Asphalt – Very short troll roadie for The Band with Rocks In.

Miss VaVa Voom – Does a Feather Dance at the Skunk Club.

Brother Charnel – Most famous horn player who stole gold from the Temple of Offler. He was a felonius monk.

Grisham Frord – Apparent leader of the Close Harmony Singers.

Close Harmony Singers – Crack enforcers of the Musicians’ Guild.

Molly (UU) – Kitchen girl at UU.

Polly (UU) – Kitchen girl at UU.

Dolly (UU) – Kitchen girl at UU.

(Rufus) Drumknott – Lord Vetinari’s servant.

Salami – Composed Prelude to a Nocturne on a Theme by Bubbla.

Dorfl – Golem in Long Hogmeat. Eventually given a voice and made a constable of the Watch. Helps other golems own themselves.

Cantaloupe – Perhaps a muse?

Vince – He was stabbed on a Wednesday in the Mended Drum.

Mr Klopstock – Manager of the Bull Pit in Pseudopolis.

Stalling Ken – Cohort of Foul Old Ron.

Coffin Henry – Member of the Canting Crew with Foul Old Ron.

Lord Downey – Originally deputy to Dr Cruces. Eventually succeeded him as head of the Assassins’ Guild.

Snori Snoriscousin – Leader of the Brass Idiots (band) of which Glod had been a member.

Arnold Sideways – Legless member of the Canting Crew.

Duck Man, The – What duck?

Lord Robert Selachii – An assassin. Member of a prominent family in Ankh-Morpork.

Bertie the Balladeer – Leader of the Troubadour Rascals (band) for whom Asphalt once worked.

Nudger Malik – One-time member of the Klatchian Foreign Legion.

Timo Laziman – Thief who accosted Albert costing him most of his remaining minutes.

Chalky – Troll who ran an all-night pottery, a wholesale building supply, and a print shop.

Clay – His father got Buddy’s autograph (for him, of course).

Most Holy St Bobby – Aka Ossory’s Ass. Made a bishop for having been in the desert with Ossory.

Crag – Princess Jade likes him.
