Raising Steam Places – Chronologic

Raising Steam covers a lot of ground – literally. Here is a chronological list of those places. Find the alphabetical list on this page.

Ankh (River) – That which divides Ankh the city from Morpork. You can usually walk on the surface of the Ankh, even if you’re not a deity.

Ankh-Morpork – The largest city on the Disc where much of the action in the Discworld series takes place. Ruled by the Patrician. Home of Unseen University.

Quirm – A city near Ankh-Morpork, not to be confused with Chirm. Probably.

Sheepridge – Hosted the hiring fair at which Mort was apprenticed to Death.

Sto Lat – A small city in the Sto Plains, first mentioned in passing in Equal Rites. Home of King Olerve and Princess Keli.

Überwald – Home to many werewolf, vampires, Igors, and other races. Homeland of Angua and Cheery.

Ephebe – Located across the Djel (or Djelibeybi, if you prefer) from Tsort. Home of philosophers.

Koom Valley – Location of an historic battle between dwarves and trolls.

Wilinus Pass – Dangerous (unless you’re Vimes and Inigo Skimmer) pass leading into Uberwald.

Bonk – Properly pronounced Be-yonk. In Uberwald, home to Lady Margolotta, the werewolf clan of Baron Guye von Uberwald, the dwarf Low King, Captain Tantony, and the (nearby) Schmaltzberg fat mines. Not a major tourist attraction.

Schmaltzberg – Near Bonk. Famed for the fat mines which legend says came from the Fifth Elephant, a creature that used to support the Disk with the other four but somehow crashed into Uberwald leaving its legacy for inhabitants to discover.

Treacle Mine Road – Ankh-Morpork. Just off Elm Street.

Royal Bank – On Broad Way. Moist von Lipwig, with the prompting of Lord Vetinari, used the bank to bring Ankh-Morpork into the world of paper money.

Post Office – On Broad Way, opposite the Patrician’s Palace, Ankh-Morpork.

Royal Mint – Handles (poorly) the money of Ankh-Morpork, until Moist von Lipwig comes along.

Golem Trust, The – Dolly Sisters. Run by Adora Belle Dearheart. Buys golems from their owners and then allows golems to buy their own freedom, at cost.

Scoone Avenue – Ankh-Morpork. Location of the Ramkin estate.

Sto Plains – Area in which the cities of Sto Lat, Sto Helit, and Ankh-Morpork are located.

Effing Forest – Just outside Ankh-Morpork. Where the Wesley brothers met their end, explosively.

Treacle Miner / Sticky Head – Where tales are told of days of old – and not so old.

Shires, The – Location of Crundells, surrounded by Ankh-Morpork, Quirm, Sto Lat, and Pseudopolis.

Cori Celesti – 10-mile high mountain at the Hub of the Disc. Home to the gods of Dunmanifestin. Possible translation: Heart of heaven.

Unseen University – The home of the Disc’s wizards, a very magical place where magic is almost never used, and for good reason. Known as UU, for short. Sometimes misspelled, Unesene.

Guild of Lawyers – Eh, why not? The president is Mr Slant.

Oblong Office – The main room of the Patrician in the Palace. Definitely not the same as the Oval Office.

XXXX (Fourecks) – Fabled hidden continent, mate. Terror Incognita. EcksEcksEcksEcks.

Llamedos – Pllace from which Imp y Celyn hailed. (Nasty when read backwards.)

Pantygirdl – Also, Pant-y-Girdl. Capitl of Llamedos.

River Gate – Ankh-Morporkian gate that opens near the river Ankh.

Nightingale Valley – Location of a new housing development being offered by CMOT Dibbler Practically Real Estate and Associates.

Sunflower Gardens – Location of a new housing development being offered by CMOT Dibbler Practically Real Estate and Associates.

CMOT Dibbler Practically Real Estate and Associates – Run by the Dib-man, so you know it’s legit, right?

Cockbill Street – Where Sam Vimes grew up. Poorest part of Ankh-Morpork.

Pigsty Hill – A street in the Shambles near the Cattle Market. A golem once caused it to be packed with cattle.

Monastery of Oi Dong – Created by Wen the Eternally Surprised. Home of the History Monks.

Shangri-La – The monastery of Oi Dong bears similarities to this Roundworld place.

Swine Town – Near Sto Lat. A stop along the railway line.

Skund – Literally, Your Finger You Fool.

NoThingfjord – From whence the dwarf Mad’s family blew in to Fourecks when he was a kid.

Sto Kerrig – Small place in the Sto Plains. (Probably should have been mentioned in the Mort listing.)

Dolly Sisters – Neighborhood now absorbed by Ankh-Morpork. Has a Watch House.

Loose Chippings – Probable home of Reginald Stibbings.

Pink PussyCat Club – Strip club in Ankh-Morpork where Tawneee, Broccolee, and Mrs. Spudding (age 75) have performed.

Peach Pie Street – Middle of three roads separating UU from the Palace.

Copperhead Mountain – Major peak in Lancre.

Shades, The – A section of Ankh-Morpork that is darker (in more ways than one) than it sounds.

Quarry Lane – Heavily populated by trolls.

Blackglass – Where the mother (a Beldame) of the Fool (Verence II) hailed from.

Cunning Artificers’ Guild – Some of its members helped Leonard of Quirm to craft the Kite.

Tanty, The – Ankh-Morpork’s main prison.

Pseudopolis – A major city on the Disc. In The Colour of Magic, Death is headed there because of the white plague striking the city. Home of Eric.

Upunder – First stop on the Sto Plains railway line after Ankh-Morpork.

Lancre – A small kingdom in the Ramtops. Home of Nanny Ogg and several other witches and wizards.

Lady Sibyl Free Hospital – Where Dr. Lawn works. Has the unusual reputation of aiming to get people well.

Dirty Rat – Dwarf pub in Ankh-Morpork. Not the place to frequent if you like umbrellas in your drinks.

Fat Marie’s – Roadside eatery along the Quirm turnpike. Now serves goblins.

Tump, The – Small, steep hill at the hubward-by-turnwise edge of Ankh-Morpork. Location of Tump Tower.

Broad Way – One of Ankh-Morpork’s busiest streets. Intersects the Street of Small Gods.

Scrote – One-horse town in the Sto Plains where The Band with Rocks In once played.

Big Cabbage – The Green Heart of the Plains. Home of BrassicaWorld where you can meet Captain Cabbage, Cauliflower the Clown, and Billy Broccoli…if you dare. There’s much more, but I won’t spoil the fun.

Djelibeybi – Literally, “Child of the Djel”. Land of the pyramids. Home of Teppic and his ancestors.

Street of Cunning Artificers, The – Ankh-Morpork. Contains just what you think. Only moreso.

Quirm Central – Like Grand Central, only in Quirm.

Higher Overhang – In the Shires. Probably just above all the other Overhangs.

Pseudopolis Yard – Ankh-Morpork, not Pseudopolis. A circular street located at the city’s center. The Opera House and City Watch are on it.

Overhang Minor – A colony of goblins flourished there.

Ramtop Mountains – One of the main mountain ranges Hubward.

Alchemists’ Guild – It’s around here somewhere, continually being rebuilt.

Twoshirts – Located in the Chalk. Home of Abiding Swindell, Nosey Hinds, and Clem Doins.

Quirm College for Young Ladies – Where Susan Sto Helit was sometimes seen.

High Mouldering – In the Sto Plains. As reported by Georgina Bradshaw, noted for its salt-water baths, a nice hotel, and the amazing echoes you can hear in the Sacred Glade of Shock Knee.

Hotel Continental – Nice place to stay in High Mouldering, whether troll, human, dwarf, or goblin.

Sacred Glade of Shock Knee – At High Mouldering. Hear amazing echoes there.

Slake – Small coach stop between Uberwald and Ankh-Morpork.

Little Swelling – On the Sto Plains railway line between Hapley and Huddle. Known for its worms. (Could be worse.)

Gruffies – The railway had to tunnel under them.

Genua – Main setting of Witches Abroad. Sounds like Genoa. Feels like New Orleans.

Tsort – Location of the Valley of Tsort and thus the Great Pyramid of Tsort. Not to be confused with the Great Pyramid of Djelibeybi.

Netherglades – Swampy area near Quirm.

Shankydoodle – Town between Ankh-Morpork and Quirm known as a great exporter of champion racehorses.

Klatch – Land of deserts and some jungles. Also the source of the phrase, “Pardon my Klatchian.” The country of Klatch is on the continent of Klatch.

Brazeneck College – School for wizardry in Pseudopolis. Headed by the former Dean (of Pentacles) – Henry – from UU. Adrian Turnipseed (aka Big Mad Drongo) and Dr. Able Baker are a professors there. They have a computer called Pex which runs on chickens.

Slice – Home of Millie Hipwood / Hopgood / Hopwood, Mr Vermissage, and other minor characters.

Leshp – An underwater island that rises to the surface from time to time. Nearly the cause of a war between Ankh-Morpork and Klatch. Home of the Curious Squid.

Zemphis – A walled town probably similar to our own Memphis (Egypt).

BrassicaWorld – In Big Cabbage. Presumably similar to Disney or Wally.

Zemphis Falls – Apparently a tourist attraction near Zemphis.

Cranbury – Stop along the railway that had a clacks tower. Known for Cranbury Cabbage.

Cabbage Research Institute – In Big Cabbage, of course.

Much Come Lately – Also hyphenated. Known for the Cabbagestalker Hat.

Monks Deveril – Known for inventive topiary at Deveril Hall.

Upper and Lower Feltwhistle – Need your pig bored to death? Here’s where you go.

Seven Bangs – Has a history that includes grimchi.

Forest of Skund – The trees talk there. Especially to Rincewind who doesn’t believe they do.

Carrick / Carrack Mtns – Near the Sto Plains which contain Ankh-Morpork. Site of a “faytal fall” that Mort had to deal with.

Downsized Abbey – Now a trading bazaar in Zemphis.

Aglet Road – A trading route in Zemphis.

Counterweight Continent – A land mass made largely of octiron so as to counter-balance the larger land mass on which Ankh-Morpork exists.

Paps of Scilla – Eight rocky peaks through which you pass when three days from Zemphis. Draw your own conclusion as to why there were eight.

Sunink – Constable Bluejohn lived there just outside Ankh-Morpork.

Ohulan Cutash – The “big city”, if you live in Bad Ass. Not that many people have heard of it.

Fiddler’s Riddle – Tavern in Ohulan Cutash run by Mayor Skiller.

Lake Overshot – Ask Geoffrey Indigo about the day the lake drained and refilled itself.

Schmarm – Home of Gwendolyn Avery who heard the sound of men marching past in the night.

Everwind Glacier – Near the home of Knut the goatherder.

River Smarl – Longest river on the Disc.

Grosszugig Stein – Tavern run by Herr Muckenfuss.

Shatta – Fashion shop in the Maul, run by Madame Sharn and Pepe. Known for micromail and Juliet (Jewels), its model.

Mister Fornacite’s – Hair salon run by Teasy-Weasy Fornacite.
