Night Watch Persons – Alphabetic

Partly because this story happens in two time periods, there are a lot of characters to include in this alphabetical list of persons in Night Watch. You’ll see just as many in this chronological list.

Abba Stronginthearm – Dwarf added to the Watch.

Abbot, The – Leader of the Oi Dong History Monks. Reincarnates every several decades. Wanna bikkit. Can think in 16 dimensions.

Agony Aunt Dotsie – Works for the A-M Times. Protects the Seamstresses’ Guild with her purse.

Agony Aunt Sadie – Works for the A-M Times. Protects the Seamstresses’ Guild with her umbrella.

Alice Band – Strict teacher at the Assassins’ school. Sent Jocasta Wiggs to see to Sam Vimes as an exercise.

Archchancellor Mustrum Ridcully the Brown – Prominent leader of Unseen University. Sorta good at what he does – whatever that is.

Big Tony – Card dealer who caused Slidey Harris to be Dr. Lawn’s unlucky patient.

Blind Io – Chief of the gods who live at Dunmanifestin. He appears to be blind but has many eyes outside his body.

Brother Kai – According to Qu, he wasn’t holding it (whatever it is) the right way up and now needed to be searched for around, oh, two centuries ago.

Brother Soon Shine Sun – History Monk who runs the Shonky Shop in Ankh-Morpork.

Bursar, The – At UU, but not a wizard. Needs his dried frog pills. Aka Mr. Dinwiddie.

Cable Street Particulars – Andre is a current member of this secret police organization.

Calcite – Young (troll) member of the Hooms Gang who likes beating up trolls.

Captain / Corporal Carrot Ironfoundersson – Member of the Night Watch. Adopted dwarf. Possibly king of Ankh-Morpork. Later promoted to Captain.

Captain Burns – Much like Mountjoy-Standfast and Wrangle, he gets it.

Captain Findthee Swing – Headof…the Unmentionables underLord…Winder.

Captain “Mayonnaise” Quirke – Head of the Day Watch.

Captain Samuel Vimes – Head of the Ankh-Morpork Night Watch. Recovering alcoholic. Eventual spouse of Lady Ramkin and Commander of the Watch.

Captain Tilden – Head of the Treacle Mine Road Watch House in the days of Sam Vimes / John Keel.

Captain Tom Wrangle – Officer of Lord Selachii’s Light Infantry who understands things even better than Major Mountjoy-Standfast.

Carcer Dun – Thief, murderer, and worse. Nemesis of Sam Vimes / John Keel in Night Watch.

Cecil “Snouty” Clapman – Jailer at the Treacle Mine Road Watch House.

Constable Billy Wiglet – One of the first watchmen killed in the Glorious Revolution by Carcer’s men.

Constable Buggy Swires – Gnome in the Airborne Section of the Watch.

Constable Ping – Discovered that the Scone of Stone was missing from the museum.

Constable Visit-The-Infidel-With-Explanatory-Pamphlets – Call him Visit or Washpot, for short.

Constable Waddy – Member of the Night Watch under Vimes / Keel.

Corporal Cheery Littlebottom (Cheri) – Alchemist, female dwarf in the Watch.

Corporal Hildebiddle – Woke up just in time and banged on the (inside of) the coffin lid.

Corporal Cecil Wormsborough St. John “Nobby” Nobbs – Member of the Night Watch. Species: human. Probably.

Corporal Snubbs – Of the Cable Street Watch House. Paid young Nobby a half-penny to watch Vimes / Keel.

Cut-me-own-throat (C.M.O.T) Dibbler – Originally known as Claude Maximillian Overton Transpire Dibbler. Entrepreneur (unsuccessful). Will sell you a “pig” sausage innabun. Don’t ask questions.

Death – An anthrpomorphic personification comprised of a skeleton, covered in a black robe, and holding a scythe (or a sword, for kings). He communicates in CAPTIAL LETTERS without the quotation marks.

Delphine Angua von Uberwald – First werewolf and female in the Watch. Very close friend of Carrot.

Detritus – A troll who eventually becomes a leading member of the Watch.

Dr. Follett – Head of the Assassins’ Guild during the time of Lord Winder.

Dr. John “Mossy” Lawn – Trained in Klatch (where patients were actually expected to get better), he is probably the only doctor (for humans) in Ankh-Morpork who has ever cured anyone.

(Rufus) Drumknott – Lord Vetinari’s servant.

Elson Owlesly – Dragged off to the palace just for saying his lordship’s a loony.

Ethel – Owner of a fabric shop “invaded” by Sam Vimes and company.

Forsythe – Ramkin family butler in the early days, when Willikins was just The Boy.

Garbut Supple – Worked with his father Harry.

Gerald “Ferret” Leastways – Cable Street Particular. Victim of the Ginger Beer Trick.

Gussie Two Grins – Dirtiest fighter Sam Vimes ever met.

Harry Supple – Tried hard to understand Reg Shoe’s People’s Declaration in regards to his shop in New Cobblers.

Henry “The Hamster” Higgins – Didn’t know how to handle Vimes’ request for a signature before handing over prisoners.

Hepplewhite – Trooper who noted that the “rebels” were singing “rebel songs” – like the national anthem.

Herbert “Leggy” Gaskin – Poor old Gaskin, former member of the Night Watch, mayherestinpeace. Replaced by Corporal Carrot.

History Monks / Order of Wen – Keepers of History, making sure it exists and follows its correct course, primarily by using Procrastinators.

Homicidal Lord Winder – Precedessor of Snapcase. His name says it all.

Hon. John Bleedwell – Trainee assassin who failed to spot the second guard on the roof.

Hooms Gang – Though they exist to beat up trolls, they have initiated a troll into their ranks. This could be progress.

Horace Nancyball – Watchman killed on the barricade in the Glorious Revolution.

Iffy Scurrick – Mate of the young Sam Vimes. Stationed at the Dolly Sisters’ Watch House.

Igor (Young) – A pioneer who doesn’t fit in in Uberwald. Goes to Ankh-Morpork to join the Watch.

Jez – Attacked Sam Vimes but paid for it.

Jocasta Wiggs – Assassin who, like many before her, failed to hit her target, Sam Vimes.

John Keel – Sergeant of the City Watch during the time of Lord Winder. He (sorta) taught Sam Vimes all he knew about policing.

Joss Gappy – Apprentice shoemaker from New Cobblers who doesn’t know how to properly break a glass bottle.

Lady Sybil Deidre Oglivanna Ramkin – Caretaker of swamp dragons and eventual spouse of Commander Vimes. Richest person in Ankh-Morpork.

Legitimate First – “Leggy” is the caretaker of the the Cemetery of Small Gods.

(Head) Librarian – Formerly human, now simian. Favorite (and nearly only) word: Oook.

Lord Albert Selachii – Of Selachii’s Light Infantry. Presumably father of Robert.

Lord Charles Venturi – Of Lord Venturi’s Medium Dragoons in Lord Winder’s day.

Lord Downey – Originally deputy to Dr Cruces. Eventually succeeded him as head of the Assassins’ Guild.

Lord Ramkin – Sybil’s father. Vimes remembered him as a bloodthirsty old devil.

Lord Rust – Aristocrat not interested in Edward d’Eath’s plot.

Lord Selachii’s Light Infantry – Army division during the time of Lord Winder.

Lord Snapcase, Psychoneurotic / Mad – In 1401, a colony of bats was executed for persistent curfew violations during his regime.

Lord Venturi’s Medium Dragoons – Army division of which Captain Tilden had once been a member.

Lord Winstanleigh Greville-Pipe – Author of the now-rare book Some Observations on the Art of Invisibility.

Lu-Tze – Not really a History Monk but visited Omnia, among other times.

“Ludo” Ludorum – Head of Viper House (Assassins’ Guild) at the time of Lord Winder.

Madame / Lady Roberta Meserole – Mysterious lady, possibly from Genua, who is an aunt of Havelock Vetinari.

Maisie Nobbs – Formerly of Elm Street. Nobby’s mother.

Major Clive Mountjoy-Standfast – Cavalry officer of Lord Venturi’s Medium Dragoons who sadly understands what’s going on at the time of the Glorious Revolution.

Marco Soto, Master – Discovered Lobsang Ludd in Ankh-Morpork and sent him to the History Monks at the Oi Dong monastery for training.

Marilyn – Horse who pulls the hurry-up wagon for the Watch.

Miss Emelia Jane – Hand-colored a book entitled Some Observations on the Art of Invisibility that had been authored by her brother, Lord Winstanleigh Greville-Pipe.

Mr. Carter – According to Lady Meserole, he is very interested in copper. (Not known to be related to the Carter’s of Lancre.)

Mr. Garnish – Drops off a lump of ice a few times a week at Mossy Lawn’s office.

Mr Harry King – King of the Golden River. The ultimate reseller.

Mr. Jones – According to Lady Meserole, he is very interested in rubber.

Mr. Maroon – Duty porter of the Assassins’ Guild.

Mr. Salciferous – Dr. Lawn’s patient who burst.

Mr Slant – Of Morecombe, Slant & Honeyplace…lawyers. Head of the Lawyers’ Guild.

Mrs. Arbiter – Makes good ginger beer.

Mrs Colon – Wife of Sgt. Colon of the Night Watch. Works days.

Mrs Content – Possible midwife who tells Sybil Ramkin she and Sam will have a baby.

Mrs. Goodbody – Known as a supplier of blunt instruments to whomever could make used of them.

Mrs. Maroon – Mr. Maroon’s wife.

Mrs. Owlesly – Her son, Elson, was dragged off to the palace for saying his lordship’s a loony.

Mrs Palm – A lady among ladies (of the night). President of the Seamstresses’ Guild. Befriends (not in that way) Corporal Carrot when he first arrives in Ankh-Morpork. Runs the House of Negotiable Affection.

Mrs. Rutherford – Sidney’s wife.

Mrs. Sandra Battye – A real seamstress; that is, a needlewoman.

Mrs. Soupson – Customer in Ethel’s fabric shop.

Muffer – Cable Street Particular. “In” on the Ginger Beer Trick played on Ferret.

Ned Coates – Lance-corporal who trained under the real John Keel.

Patrician of Ankh – The leader of the city of Ankh-Morpork. You know him cordially as Havelock Vetinari.

Ponder Stibbons – A student wizard. Reader in Invisible Writings. Often the brains of UU.

Qu – Provides the History Monks with all manner of gadgets. Some of them may be safe to use.

Reg Shoe – Undead head of the Fresh Start Club. Also a constable of the Watch.

Robertson – Student of the Assassins’ School. Possible friend of Downey.

Sceptum – According to Dr. Lawn, the philosopher founder of the medical profession who always wanted to know if he was going to be paid for this.

Sconner Nobbs – Nobby’s father.

Scratch ‘n’ Sniff – Under-boot boy at the Palace and Nobby’s mate who told him Carcer had been made Captain of the Palace Guard and was now out to get Keel / Vimes.

Scutts – Watchman and sometime partner with Wiglet.

Sergeant Dai Dickins – Of the Dimwell Street Watch House. Taught All the Little Angels to some of the lads.

Sergeant Franklin – Of Lord Selachii’s Light Infantry. Meets his match in his granny who is atop a rebel barricade.

Sergeant Frederick (Fred) Colon – Mainly of the Night Watch. Likes to stay out of trouble – especially other peoples’.

Sergeant Winsborough Knock – Of the Treacle Mine Road Watch House. Demoted by John Keel.

Sheriff Macklewheat – Commander of the Pseudopolis Watch before Sheriff Pearlie.

Sheriff Pearlie – Commander of the Pseudopolis Watch before Sheriff Macklewheat.

Sidney Rutherford – Somewhat willing to join the Glorious Revolution. Just ask his wife.

Slidey Harris – Dr. Lawn’s patient who had been unlucky at cards.

Spatchcock, Culweather, Moist, Curry, Evans, and Pounce – Six of the several men who agreed to join John Keel in the revolution against Lord Winder. (There were others more notable.)

Spymould – Food taster for Lord Winder. Immune – through exposure – to most toxins.

Sub-lieutenant Harrap – He gets all the crummy assignments, like telling Lord Winder of the failure to defeat the rebels.

Todzy – Cable Street Particular. “In” on the Ginger Beer Trick played on Ferret.

Trebilcock – Findthee Swing’s clerk, until he turned King’s Evidence.

Trooper Gabitass – Made the most complete report about the barricade to Major Mountjoy-Standfast.

Wallace Sonky – Manufactured products – of all sorts, but especially one kind (known as Sonkies) – made of rubber.

Willikins – Butler of Lady Ramkin.
