Maskerade Persons – Chronologic

Here is a chronological listing of the persons in Maskerade – from the opening act until the fat lady sings. The same actors are here in alphabetical order.

Nanny (Gytha) Ogg – A prominent and popular (especially with gentlemen) witch who had 15 children.

Granny Weatherwax – The head witch (among equals), especially in Bad Ass country. Given name: Esmerelda. Esme, for short, but only to her closest friends.

Magrat Garlick – The youngest of the coven of three, with Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg.

Black Aliss Demurrage – The quintessential witch, the type which most present-day witches now try to avoid being compared to. Nanny Plumb’s teacher.

Verence, the Fool – Becomes King Verence II when his half brother, Tomjon, decides not to be king of Lancre.

J.H.C. Goatberger – Publisher who produced Nanny Ogg’s The Joye of Snacks.

Thomas Cropper – Chief printer at Goatberger’s publishing house.

Mr Cripslock – Engraver who works for Goatberger.

Seriph of Ee – Briefly noted for his “Amazing Death”.

Agnes Nitt / Perdita X. Dream – Wants to be a “real” witch. Can sing in thirds.

Walter Plinge – Performs many jobs at the Opera House. Composes music in his spare time.

Violet Frottidge / Magenta – Wants to be a “real” witch.

Deviousness Carter – Sweet on Violet Frottidge.

Bonnie Quarney – Gathered nuts in May with William Simple.

William Simple – Contributed to Bonnie Quarney’s nuts of May collection.

Mildred Tinker – Close friend of Hob Thatcher.

Mrs Tinker – Obliquely referenced as Mildred’s mother in Maskerade.

Tinker – The tinker. One of Lancre’s Morris Men.

Thatcher – The carter. One of Lancre’s Morris Men.

Hob Thatcher – Close friend of Mildred Tinker.

Greebo – Nanny Ogg’s cat. He will mate with any unsuspecting female.

Miss Proudlet – Apparently a pianist at the Opera House.

Jarge Weaver – The thatcher. One of Lancre’s Morris Men. Assuming it was the same man who had his back “fixed” by Granny Weatherwax.

Seldom Bucket – Former cheese-maker. Now owns the Ankh-Morpork Opera House. May some day make it profitable.

Mr Salzella – Opera House music director and sometime Ghost.

Dr Undershaft – Opera House chorus master. Unfortunately surprised the Ghost.

Christine – Opera House prima donna!! Isn’t that exciting?!

Mme Venturi – Christine studied with her for 3 years at the Quirm Conservatory. Doesn’t seem to have helped.

Mrs Nitt – Wife of Terminal. Mother of Agnes. Has tea leaves read by Nanny Ogg.

Old Mother (Gammer) Dismass – Elderly witch who doesn’t get out much.

Millie Hipwood (Wyrd Sisters) / Hopgood (Witches Abroad) / Hopwood (Maskerade) – According to Nanny Ogg, she “ditch-delivered” a baby girl who turned out fine. (See Macbeth for details.) Assuming the last names are typos or unrecognized changes as all live in Slice.

Terminal Nitt – Father of Agnes. Apparently the last of 3 sons.

Primal Nitt – Apparently the first of 3 sons.

Medial Nitt – Apparently the middle child.

Nev Ogg – One of Nanny Ogg’s many children. Perhaps a triplet with Kev and Trev?

Shawn Ogg, Our – Nanny Ogg’s son who is a guard at Lancre Castle.

Patrician of Ankh – The leader of the city of Ankh-Morpork. You know him cordially as Havelock Vetinari.

Cando Cutoff – Humble woodcutter who informed Nanny and Granny that the coach didn’t stop where they were waiting for it. (But it did anyway.)

Mrs Grope – Had to have a lie-down after Greebo did “It” in front of her.

Tommy Cripps – Opera House scene painter and unfortunate victim of the Ghost.

Giselle – Does makeup at the Opera House. Said she saw the Ghost…last week.

Mr Pounder – Opera House rat-catcher. Assisted into his next life as a rat by the Death of Rats.

Ron – With Mr Pounder, helps Tommy Cripps down to the Opera House canteen.

André – Musician and undercover member of the Cable Street Particulars.

Mr Pnigeus – One of the partners who sold the Opera House to Seldom Bucket.

Mr Cavaille – One of the partners who sold the Opera House to Seldom Bucket.

Death – An anthrpomorphic personification comprised of a skeleton, covered in a black robe, and holding a scythe (or a sword, for kings). He communicates in CAPTIAL LETTERS without the quotation marks.

Reg Plenty – Had an “accident” at Bucket’s cheese factory.

Fred Chiswell – May have caused an “accident” at Bucket’s cheese factory.

Senor Enrico Basilica / Henry Slugg – Very large tenor at the Opera House.

Mr Slot – Granny Weatherwax beat Death at poker to save the Slot’s child at the expense of their cow.

Angeline Lawsy – Henry Slugg’s sweetheart among the drains of Ankh-Morpork. Mother of Henry Lawsy.

Jason Ogg, Our – One of Nanny Ogg’s many children. Nanny betimes babbysits for Jason’s youngest.

Kev Ogg – One of Nanny Ogg’s many children. Perhaps a triplet with Trev and Nev?

Mrs Plinge – Walter’s mother. Cleaned the Opera House. Found Mr Pounder whistling on stage…until he was hanging above it.

Death of Rats – Once part of Death, he retained his own identity even after Bill Door ceased to be.

Mr Reever – Coach driver privileged to transport Nanny and Granny.

Mrs Palm – A lady among ladies (of the night). President of the Seamstresses’ Guild. Befriends (not in that way) Corporal Carrot when he first arrives in Ankh-Morpork. Runs the House of Negotiable Affection.

Dame Violetta Gigli – Former soprano at the Opera House.

Dame Clarissa Extendo – Former soprano at the Opera House.

Hildabrun – Leader of the Valkyries (at least, in an opera).

Valkyries – Maidens who take slain warriors to the Halls of the Slain. I mean, where else?

Nobbo – A dwarf sung about in opera.

Blind Io – Chief of the gods who live at Dunmanifestin. He appears to be blind but has many eyes outside his body.

Dame Veritasi – Once stuffed a musician down his own tuba for yawning.

Colette – Seamstress with large earrings. Recognized Granny Weatherwax.

Dame Tessitura – Operatic bass with a beard you could strike a match on and a nose flattened half across her face. Could open beer bottles with her thumb.

Mrs Cropper – Surprised after Mr Cropper tried Nanny’s Bananana Soup Surprise.

Herr Trubelmacher – Manages the orchestral instruments at the Opera House.

Mr Scruple – Of Slice. Had an acid stomach that tended toward the occult.

Dame Timpani – Sings the part of Quizella. Not a fan of Christine.

Carborundum – Troll hired by Goatberger to keep Nanny and Granny out of the publishing house.

Bishop of Quirm – Didn’t spontaneously combust.

Captain Samuel Vimes – Head of the Ankh-Morpork Night Watch. Recovering alcoholic. Eventual spouse of Lady Ramkin and Commander of the Watch.

Madame Dawning – Proprietor of a fashionable dress shop where Granny Weatherwax made several purchases, using Nanny Ogg’s money.

Mildred – Assistant to Madame Dawning.

Dowager Duchess of Quirm – Lady Esmerelda admired a creation intended for her at Madame Dawning’s dress shop.

Seriph of Klatch – Andre used to teach music to his children…possibly.

Mrs Clamp – Has an encounter with Greebo and a squid in the Opera House kitchen.

Gimlet Gimlet – Owns the Hole Food Delicatessen.

Queen Ezeriel – Of Klatch. Died smelling like yoghurt when she sat on a snake. Admired by Princess Keli.

(Head) Librarian – Formerly human, now simian. Favorite (and nearly only) word: Oook.

Bloody Stupid Johnson – Born, Bergholt Stuttley Johnson, but few remember those names. His works deserve an article all their own and may or may not ever get one.

Les – Opera House stage-doorkeeper. Favored with some ointment from Nanny.

Mrs Les – Les’s wife. Had a sister with a leg problem. Nanny may have helped with that too.

Henry Lawsy – Legal clerk at Slant, Morecombe, and Honeyplace. Love child of his mother and Henry Slugg.

Mr Schwartzlache von Morecombe – Vampire who has been the Ramkin family lawyer for over 400 years.

Nellie Stamp – Performs “A Winkle’s No Use if You Don’t Have a Pin” at the music hall, not the Opera House.

Corporal Cecil Wormsborough St. John “Nobby” Nobbs – Member of the Night Watch. Species: human. Probably.

Detritus – A troll who eventually becomes a leading member of the Watch.

Peter – Nanny gave him powder for his bad feet. They’re better now.

Mr Sidney – Opera House worker once greeted – normal as anything – by Walter Plinge.

Cable Street Particulars – Andre is a current member of this secret police organization.

Weevins – Once minced his thumb in the stirring machine at Bucket’s cheese factory.

Mr Lawsy – Eel-juggler. Husband of Mrs Lawsy but not Henry’s father.
