Here are the characters in Equal Rites in order of appearance in said book. You’ll find the same in alphabetical order here.
Gandalf – He of The Ring.
Merlin – He of The Round Table.
Great A’Tuin – He or she is the turtle who moves through space in the Discworld universe. On his or her back are 4 elephants. On the backs of the elephants rests the Disc itself.
Drum Billet – Wizard who gave his staff – sorta by mistake – to Eskarina Smith.
Death – An anthrpomorphic personification comprised of a skeleton, covered in a black robe, and holding a scythe (or a sword, for kings). He communicates in CAPTIAL LETTERS without the quotation marks.
Granny Weatherwax – The head witch (among equals), especially in Bad Ass country. Given name: Esmerelda. Esme, for short, but only to her closest friends.
Gordo Smith – Eskarina’s father. A smith.
Eskarina Smith – 8th “son” of an 8th son of an 8th son. The first widely-known female wizard. Esk, for short.
Jaims Smith – Esk’s oldest brother.
Cern Smith – One of two of Esk’s younger brothers. Ce, for short.
Gulta Smith – One of two of Esk’s younger brothers. Esk turned him into a pig.
Uncle Derghart – Deceased relative of the Smith family.
Apple Tree Wizard – This tree in the Smith’s yard told Granny Weatherwax it used to be a wizard. Name withheld to protect…well, everybody.
Hoki – God of practical jokes. Banished from Dunmanifestin.
Gammer Tumult – Witch who taught Granny Weatherwax much of what she knows, but probably not everything.
Ice Giants – Pests to the gods in Dunmanifestin. Giants can be that way.
Hilta Goatfounder – Witch who is a friend of Granny Weatherwax, sometime fortune teller, and purveyor of popular, if secretive, wares.
Skiller – Landlord of The Fiddler’s Riddle, a tavern temporarily befriended by Esk.
Mrs Skiller – The more intelligent member of the Skiller family.
Zoons – Trustworthy traders, shippers on the riverways of the Disc.
Amschat B’hal Zoon – A Zoon tribal Liar. Befriended Esk who stowed away on his barge.
Master Treatle – Vice-Chancellor of Unseen University.
Adab Gander – Trail boss who allows Esk to join his travellers.
Simon – Stuttering wizard-in-training.
Bel-Shamharoth – A many-tentacled monster in whose presence you do not say the number between seven and nine (not 7a). He is also known as the Sender of Eight.
C’hulagen – A dark god of the Necrotelicomnicon.
The Insider – A dark god of the Necrotelicomnicon.
Mrs Palm – A lady among ladies (of the night). President of the Seamstresses’ Guild. Befriends (not in that way) Corporal Carrot when he first arrives in Ankh-Morpork. Runs the House of Negotiable Affection.
Archchancellor Cutangle – Head of Unseen University (at the time of Equal Rites).
Alberto Malich the Wise (Albert) – Founder of Unseen University. “Wise” may just be an honorarium. Death’s housekeeper.
Granpone the White – A wizard who needs to take better care of his laundry, if he wants to keep that color in his name.
Ksandra – A maid at Unseen University who normally has clothes pegs in her mouth, even while talking.
Mrs Whitlow – Chief servant, Aye believe, at Unseen University. A psychic.
Mrs Herapath – Wife of the glassblower, Old Mister Once A Fortnight.
Nanny Annaple – Esk had assisted with many of Nanny’s goats’ births.
Jeophal the Spry – Professor of Beginners’ Dematerialisation at Unseen University. His name was hopefully well-deserved.
Steven Spielberg – He of E.T.
K’turni – The tribe who invented the word p’ch’zarni’chiwkov. Please forgive them.
Cumhoolie – People who translate p’ch’zarni’chiwkov as squernt. Easier to speak, but obviously loses much in translation.
Acktur Cutangle – Father of Archchancellor Cutangle.
